Co-op Owned Rail Public Transit System

Submitted by MattMcAdoo on Sun, 04/22/2012 - 17:45

For some time I've had the idea of a privately owned (probably a co-op structure) rail based public transit system, in the Georgetown-Austin-San-Antonio area. This transit corridor has been debated by statists on what should be the perfect system, so it may sound familiar. The main differences in this idea are, first, this would be operated as a private co-op, not the state; second, it would utilize existing rail stock.

Definition of Freedom - From my 2006 Congressional campaign site

Submitted by MattMcAdoo on Sun, 04/22/2012 - 01:51

When most politicians and candidates speak of Freedom, few if any will ever define the meaning of their use of it. To paraphrase Andrew Galambos, when I say Freedom I mean this: 100% control over your life, liberty, and property 100% of the time, and 0% control of someone else's. Any other deviation from this is some from of coercion or tyranny of one over another. People are naturally Free, but let themselves succumb to the will of others, sometimes voluntarily, such as in a employee-employer relationship; sometimes through the threat of violence and coercion, such as government.

DIY Spark plug socket using an old sock

Due to the depth of the spark plug holes on the engine block of my car, a Toyota Yaris, I was in absolute need for means of extracting out the spark plug. I had an old spark plug socket but the rubber ring was not present. Here's how I used the "leg" of a sock.

1. Here's the basic components: 5/8" deep socket (make sure the spark plug fits with plenty of room to spare!), old sock, scissors.Sock, scissors, spak plug, and spark plug socket

Quickbooks Enterprise 11 R9, multi-user error H202, and mapped drives

Due to some network changes at work (hosting the file on Windows 2008 R2 instead of Linux(1), updating all the client systems to Windows 7, etc.) , we started having problems where our Quickbooks Enterprise 11 R9 users were having problems switching from Single-user to Multi-user modes. The problem started showing where the one user who would need to switch from Single to Multi user modes was not able to do so and got the H202 error; which basically states that the system is unable to communicate with the server process and whether the file should be hosted locally.

Using Netfilter's Conntrack module for HTTP and SSH, with default policy of DROP

Submitted by MattMcAdoo on Thu, 02/23/2012 - 00:27

After reading how Netfilter's CONNTRACK system supersedes the STATE module, I've gone through and converted my current firewall parameters to be "pure" CONNTRACK. While it is not absolutely necessary to do this change, I'd rather use the tool that will allow for more granularity.

mini-HOWTO for setting up PHP-FPM with Apache on Gentoo

Submitted by MattMcAdoo on Wed, 01/19/2011 - 00:37

With the recent addition of PHP 5.3 into Gentoo's main Portage, came the ability to use the new FPM (FastCGI Process Manager) function. What this allows for in basic terms is the ability to have PHP processing done by a separate server process, that is in itself fully configurable, and not rely on an Apache process to spawn one. There are many more features that this addition does, check the link above.
